How a Stylist Builds a Fall Wardrobe

A great fall wardrobe isn’t about starting over. It’s about finding the right layers, versatile staples, and seasonal updates that make everything you already own feel fresh again.

We recently stepped inside a personal styling session with Ashley, our Atherton Mill Store Manager, as she helped her client Laura get ready for the season ahead. From rich fall color to elevated layers and hardworking capsule pieces, Ashley’s approach is all about creating a wardrobe that feels polished, personal, and easy to wear.

A Personal Approach to Fall Styling

At Uniquities, personal styling begins with understanding how you actually live and get dressed.

For Laura, Ashley selected pieces that could take her through different parts of her week rather than building one-off outfits. A great jacket, updated pant, fitted knit, statement accessory, and versatile shoe can create countless combinations when every piece is chosen with intention.

After nearly 35 years of styling women, that philosophy continues to guide us: you don’t necessarily need more clothes—you need the right ones.

Start With Layers That Transform an Outfit

The quickest way to transition a wardrobe into fall? Add a great layer.

Ashley incorporated everything from a cognac suede jacket to a soft ivory knit, giving Laura pieces she can layer over dresses, denim, trousers, and everyday basics as temperatures change.

A thoughtfully chosen jacket can completely shift an outfit while still feeling timeless enough to reach for season after season.

Make Fall Color Your New Neutral

This season, Ashley is leaning into a palette of chocolate brown, cognac, cream, camel, and deep earthy tones.

Rather than reserving these shades for statement pieces, think of them as neutrals. Chocolate trousers can replace your everyday black pants. Cognac suede works beautifully with denim. Cream knits soften darker fall colors, while accessories are an easy way to introduce texture and warmth.

The result feels distinctly fall without requiring an entirely new closet.

Invest in Capsule Pieces That Work Harder

One of the most important parts of Ashley’s styling process is versatility.

For Laura, that means choosing fall wardrobe staples that can be styled multiple ways: wide-leg trousers that work with both knits and jackets, a sleeveless top that can be worn alone now and layered later, and accessories that pull everything together.

The goal is a highly edited wardrobe where pieces complement one another—making it easier to get dressed and giving you more outfit possibilities with less.

The Finishing Touches Matter

A wardrobe refresh doesn’t always require a major purchase. Sometimes the pieces that make the biggest difference are the finishing touches.

A structured handbag, statement belt, knee-high boot, or pointed-toe heel can immediately update familiar pieces. Ashley uses accessories to introduce fall texture, proportion, and personality while keeping the foundation of an outfit wearable.
